Rocky Butte Clean Up

Hey everybody,
As some of you know I have been working to try to clean up Rocky Butte. There is a potential at Rocky Butte for a variety of recreation possibilities including biking and rock climbing, unfortunately as it stands this unique area is severely degraded and overrun with garbage, drug use and prostitution. I have finally obtained permits from the land owners (ODOT) to do some work out there. There is a lot of work that needs to be done out there we are going to start with a trash clean up.

The first service project will take place on Saturday April 9th.
Meet at the end of Ne Skidmore in the cul-de-sac (just past the Grotto) . Accessable off of Ne Sandy.

Urgent Message Regarding Rocky Butte

I was out at the Grotto dirt jumps today showing some international students from PSU the area. It seems that there has (in the past few days) been some new jumps built. We are busy working with the city to try to turn this area along with the adjacent Rocky Butte natural area into a recreation area. One of our goals is to save the Grotto dirt jumps. Please respect the no trespassing signs, and chastise those who don't. As far as I know it is still "legal" to ride on the few trails that do exist here, although it is increasingly important to use caution and respect the rights of the adjacent land owners. Please pass this note on to your friends in the Portland bike scene. I will keep everyone posted as to our progress.

So I had the misfortune of watching a commercial for a shampoo company, I forget witch one, that came on during my favorite show on Animal Planet, “Pit Boss” (The show about the midgets who rescue pitbulls). In this commercial there is a couple in a fancy resturant, presumably on a first date. The woman suddenly gets the urge to scratch her head (her scalp itches). But she is worried about what her date might think, he may never call her back.

So, I just wanted to take a quick moment to ensure all of the ladies out there, go ahead and scratch, scratch it really good and hard. If this scares your date away it was probably never meant to be. In fact don’t stop with the scalp scratch everywhere (yes even down there). While you’re at it don’t forget to fart, burp, pick your nose, and get up from the table to go to the powder room, but not before proclaiming “I gotta go take a dump.” If this relationship is going to work wouldn’t it be nice to get all of this stuff out of the way on the first date. This could be the beginning of a wonderful longterm relationship of burping, farting, scratching, and while you’re at it honey, could you comb my back hair? And to think it all started with a little head scratch.

Rocky Butte State Park Clean Up

Well folks is is 2011 and we are officially back and working hard, and it is time we start living up to our new years resolution of taking better care of our planet.

We have some exciting new projects, projects that you can be a part of. I have been doing some research on a cool park that I discovered within the Portland city limits, Rocky Butte. Rocky Butte caught my attention the first time I went there to do some rock climbing. It struck me as being under used, under appreciated, and completely trashed, with amazing potential for an abundance of outdoor recreation activities.

I will be organizing a trash clean up for Rocky Butte, hopefully for the last weekend in February. I will have an exact date after I contact the city to see what kinds of resources they can provide. This will be the first of several service projects to help to make this awesome area live up to its potential. There is the possibility that in the future we may be able to connect the trails in this area to the Gateway Green Project.

Rocky Butte Stats:

Also known as Wiberg Butte, 612 feet (187meters), 1.3 million years old.

Rocky Butte is the only volcano in Portland with an abundance of exposed rock, due to being directly in line with the great ice age Missoula floods flowing through the Columbia Gorge scouring all of the soil from the East face.

Much of the rock quarried from Rocky Butte was used for WPA projects of the 1930s, including the building of the Colombia River Highway..

Rocky Butte is a State Park although on the Oregon State Parks website Tryon Creek is listed as Oregon's only state park in a metro area.

Rocky Butte was home to a jail, a train station, and a military school, at different times in history.

Supposedly there are five caves on Rocky Butte (I could only find two, both require ropes to get into.)

The truth about dogs vs. cats.

I had to run a bunch of errands today. They were all within a couple of miles of each other so I hopped on my bike and let my dog run along side of me, he is really good at this and even stops at stop signs. First stop was the I bank I did my banking, and they gave me treats to give to my dog, then we stopped at a coffee shop and they also had dog treats. Neither one of these places had cat treats. Finally we stopped at the UPS store, shipped some things, paid, then collected yet more dog treats, but still no cat treats I asked. After all of the errands were done I decided to take my loyal little buddy to the dog park so he could run around, chase squirrels and catch his frisbee. While at the dog park I wondered why cities spend millions of dollars on dog parks and none on cat parks. I guess it's true dogs are simply better than cats.

Hell Track PDX

I am working out the details of a Hell Track PDX. Think, monstercross meets downhill mixed with a super long ride. Details to follow.

So far the ride will go through Forest Park, will connect with several fire lanes. Then the ride will pop out at German Town road follow that to Skyline, then Rocky Point Road. At rocky point road the ride will connect with the trails at Scappose and end up at HWY 30 for a cruse back into PDX. This ride will be about 50 miles.

NO WHINERS OR PEOPLE WHO CAN'T HANDLE A BIT OF PAIN

Monster cross will be best suited.

Thanksgiving Morning Ride

Thanks to all those who showed up for a mellow morning of riding on Thanksgiving.

Riding with friends, making new friends, fart jokes, irish coffee (thanks Dour), peddling downhill bikes uphill, stomping through ice covered puddles, downhill single track with slick tires, crashing in the mud, and freezing toes. What a great way to kick off the holiday season.

I am at an almost complete loss of words after watching this video. We had a similar situation at the St0p Cycles shop this morning. They kicked in the front door and trampled each other to get at the Proletariat as well as some of our other offerings. I even saw someone get bitch slapped by an ETA. All in all it was a pretty typical Black Friday morning in the shop nursing our hangovers, dining on cold pizza, and fighting the obsessive compulsive hoards who have been waiting in sub-freezing temps for days just to get their hands on the latest from St0p Cycles. Happy holidays everybody.

Please note at about 2:15 in the video on the right side of the screen a woman in a white coat is knocked over trampled, consequently her wig is knocked off of her head. As people fight their way through the door and continue to trample her, she takes the time to put her wig back on before attempting to get up. This woman is my new hero, she obviously knows the importance of looking good while risking your life to get a Play Station at a 10% discount.

Techie Tips is not intended to be instruction. I do provide step by step processes of some of the things that I do when maintaining bicycles. These processes require specialized tools and knowledge. The goal here is to highlight the importance of proper bicycle maintenance, and to keep you rolling safely and efficiently.

As we roll into the rainy season I wanted to clean and inspect my trusty steed. For the most part things were looking pretty good until I got to the bottom bracket and crank set, I was apparently growing a small garden along the lower part of the down tube and bottom bracket shell.

This illustrates the importance of cleaning and inspecting your bicycle from time to time. Much of the stuff stuck to my frame and bottom bracket was smaller grains of sand and road grime. If not attended to this particulate will end up making it through the seals and into the grease and bearings, and eventually cause accelerated wear on the bottom bracket.

I decided to overhaul the entire crank system and extend the fender to further reduce the amount of sand and grime that gets thrown up into my frame

I started this job the way I start all overhaul type jobs, I start by removing the parts. I start with the pedals, then pull the cranks, then I remove the bottom bracket. For the bottom bracket I simply wipe it off with a dry shop towel, you don’t want to use degreaser on sealed bearings. I then bring the crank arms to the parts washer (my kitchen sink) and cleaned them thoroughly using a biodegradable degreaser. I also removed the chainring, as I find it is easier to clean chainrings when they are removed from the cranks, and it gives you the opportunity to check the chainring bolts. Finally I clean the threads on the pedals.

Now with all of the parts thoroughly cleaned it is time to clean the frameand the threads inside of the bottom bracket shell, you don’t want to put freshly cleaned parts back on a dirty frame. As we roll into this wet season I like to use extra grease to inhibit water from getting into the parts and frame.

Finally it is time to extend the fender. Fenders are an integral part of your cycling attire. Not only to they keep you from developing a skunk stripe up your back, they also keep your bicycle clean. A good set of fenders will reduce the amount of grime thrown at your derailleurs, brakes, bottom bracket, and lower head set cup. My fenders were not doing such a good job, so I removed the old mud flap and the rivets holding it in place. Then I cut up an old tire and made a longer mudflap, punched a couple of holes in it and bolted it to the existing rivet holes. With every thing fresh and clean we are ready to roll through another wet Pacific North West season.
