I was out at the Grotto dirt jumps today showing some international students from PSU the area. It seems that there has (in the past few days) been some new jumps built. We are busy working with the city to try to turn this area along with the adjacent Rocky Butte natural area into a recreation area. One of our goals is to save the Grotto dirt jumps. Please respect the no trespassing signs, and chastise those who don't. As far as I know it is still "legal" to ride on the few trails that do exist here, although it is increasingly important to use caution and respect the rights of the adjacent land owners. Please pass this note on to your friends in the Portland bike scene. I will keep everyone posted as to our progress.

Portland blows and is only Roadie friendly. Stop yourself from complaining Portland
ReplyDeleteFyi don't let too many bmxers know you are giving tours of what used to be secret spots. Stop cycles from ruining secrets.
ReplyDeleteYou may have misunderstood the intent of the post. I was not "giving tours" of a "secret area" I am working with PSU and the City to try to make Rocky Butte more user friendly, with the intent of saving the Grotto. We are conducting a site assessment. Furthermore the Grotto is far from secret the owners of the property (ODOT) are well aware of its existence. What I am trying to say is that we should respect the wishes of the land owners, in my 20+ years of mountain biking and rock climbing I have seen far too many areas shot down due to complacency and inaction by the stakeholders. If you would like to help out please join us this spring for some service projects that we will be hosting in this area.
